But every time I am in a room like this one, I walk away with a renewed sense of purpose and feel the sense of urgency to move faster, sooner. I was invited by a female friend who had made it to the “list.” So to state the obvious – we need a new list ASAP! I am so proud of what many of us are doing to bring equity to these discussions. And I was not on the invitee list to start with. I was the only woman of color in a predominantly male group of attendees. When you think about Silicon Valley and Seattle exercising such significant influence in shaping global business and policy, it begs the question, how do we exercise that influence responsibly?Ģ. We have a disproportionate impact in the world - Looking around the room brings home the point the disproportionate influence and tech “center of gravity” here in the US. Given business models are about monetizing data, there is an incentive for companies to nudge us down a path to desired outcomesĪs a side-bar, here are my observations of the “room”ġ. We are in an age of behavioral manipulation. Outrage and fear are more contagious than positive engagement – so raising unrest and spreading fake news is certainly more of a force multiplier vs positive news.ģ.
